        The third brother, Edward (1767-1852), was adopted by wealthy relatives, the Knights, whose name he took over when, in the early nineteenth century, he inherited their estate, Godmersham in Kent. Jane Austen lived in close friendship with his eldest daughter, Fanny Knight (1793-1882), whose mother, Elizabeth (née Bridges, 1773-1808), died when Fanny was 15 years old.
        
        Henry (1771-1850), the fourth brother of Jane Austen, was her favorite. He was handsome and optimistic about life, just like his oldest brother, he studied at Oxford. In 1797 he married Eliza de Feuillide (1761-1813), an Austen cousin. After bankruptcy in 1815, he became a pastor.
        
        The two youngest brothers, Frank (1774-1865) and Charles (1779-1852), joined the Navy at the age of 12. During the Napoleonic wars, they fought in the British fleet and eventually both became Admirals.
        
        Before Cassie was born Cassandra Elizabeth (1773-1845), the only sister of the writer, with whom she had an extremely close relationship. She was engaged to Thomas Fowle, who sailed as a chaplain to the Caribbean and died in 1797 for yellow fever. Cassandra often went to visit her brothers, thanks to which correspondence between her and her sister was born. A large part of the letters has survived to this day, constituting a rich source of information about the writer's life
- - - - Ane Austen never got married, however, she had a few flirts and sympathies, which mainly boil down to three people.
      - At the turn of 1795 and 1796, Jane met the Irishman Thomas Lefroy, with whom she flirted on three balls, after which the official knowledge ended. However, information has recently emerged that the relationship could have lasted longer, and Jane could have been much more involved than it would seem from the tone of the few surviving letters .
      - The second love is even more mysterious. During one of her annual trips to the sea, which she held when the Austen family lived in Bath, Jane met a nice young man who, in Cassandra's words, fell in love with Jane and any proposal on his part would certainly have been accepted. Circumstances, however, meant that the young man had to leave, and the only information about him, which later reached the sisters, reported his death.
      - In December 1802, Jane and Cassandra visited friends in Hampshire, Bigg of Manydown, and then Harris Bigg-Wither, 6 years younger than Jane, proposed to her. Jane accepted the proposal, but the next day she changed her mind and with Cassandra returned in a hurry to Bath. Jane was 27 at the time and she was considered an old maiden, so it is no wonder that she accepted the proposal of a wealthy man who would provide her well-being, however Harris Bigg-Wither was neither beautiful nor intellectful, so it's not surprising that eventually she changed her mind
