The third brother, Edward (1767-1852), was adopted by wealthy relatives, the Knights, whose name he took over when, in the early nineteenth century, he inherited their estate, Godmersham in Kent. Jane Austen lived in close friendship with his eldest daughter, Fanny Knight (1793-1882), whose mother, Elizabeth (née Bridges, 1773-1808), died when Fanny was 15 years old.
