Christian beliefs
The creation
All Christians believe that God was responsible for the creation of the world and the whole universe
-
-
-
"God says let there be light, and there was light" - reflects that God created light and therefore he has much power
Account in Genesis 1
-
Day 1 - Creates heaven and earth, night and day
-
Day 3 - creates land, trees and plants
Day 4 - creates the sun, moon and stars
-
-
-
Says man and women are created at the same time, so are equal, and are also made in God's image
They are given authority over creation (dominion), which also suggests they need to care for creation (steward ship)
-
-
Account in Genesis 2-3
-
-
-
Places Adam in the garden, but God thought Adam was lonely, so he created animals and Adam named them
Birds and animals aren't suitable helpers, so God puts Adam to sleep and creates Eve from one of his ribs
Adam and Eve are innocent, so cannot eat from the tree of knowledge, where they learn of good and evil
-
Their eating the apple is the original sin, and they try to hide from God by covering themselves with leaves
God punishes Eve with pain in childbirth and Adam must work his whole life - birth of sin, evil and suffering
-
The Incarnation

Also believe Jesus is the son of God, and is also the word of God

Salvation
-
-
-
Christians believe that Jesus' sacrifice shows God's love for humanity - he gave his only son to save man
Atonement - man at one with God - sin can no longer separate humans from the love and embrace of God
-
His death and resurrection brings atonement - if Christians repent of their sins they can become one with God
-
-
-
-
The Trinity
-
God can be experienced in three ways, the father, the son and the holy spirit
God the Father
God is shown to protect, guide and care for his people to show his power and creativity
-
-
-
God as Son
Jesus helps Christians to understand God's love, as it is easier to identify with another human being
-
Jesus used God's power for good - to heal and feed people, and he treated everyone equally - love is better than hate etc.
By dying on the cross, Jesus showed how much God loved man by sacrificing his only son
Jesus died so he could rise again and future Christians could believe that if they follow him they will also rise again and be with God
Jesus freed mankind of their sin by dying on the cross, but that doesn't mean that humans no longer sin
God as Holy Spirit
-
-
Believe the power of the holy spirit can made ordinary people do extraordinary things (eg. miracles)
By praying, you are communicating with God through the Holy Spirit
God is omnibenevolent (all loving), omnipotent (all powerful, omniscient (all knowing) and omnipresent (everywhere in any time at once)
Relationships between aspects of the Trinity are a model for human relationships and relationships within the church - love and unity and respect
