Additive Manufacturing
WET Process
Stereolithography Apparatus (SLA)
It consists of...
UV Ray
Movable Build Platform (up and down)
vat of UV-curable photopolymer
Part Material
Concept models (for form and fit studies)
Master patterns for molding techniques
How is the part made?
Slicing Process
Each layer is constructed from UV laser directed by X and Y scanning mirrors
Laser traces the cross section and solidifies the area
After each layer is complete, build platform is indexed down
A recoater blade moves across the surface (to ensure thin coat of liquid resin is evenly spread)
Liquid material is hardened on contact
Laser continues to trace and form layer atop the previous layer (building from the bottom up)
A chemical bath (remove excess resin)
Ultraviolet oven (cure the part and remove support structures)
Slicing
1.CAD data is sliced into thin cross-sections/layers
Data is transferred to an SLA system
3D CAD data input into system
DRY Process
Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)
What is it?
A process which uses laser selectively to trace the surface of powder and sinters the material together
It consists of...
PEEK materials
Powdered Nylon 11, Nylon 12
Part Material
highly durable
heat and chemical resistant
light-weight
amorphous materials (rough surface finishes and porous)
How is the part made?
Powder feed piston rise to distribute layer of material and part building cylinder lowers to layer thickness
Other powder feed piston also lowers to accommodate any surplus material
Slicing Process
Deposited powder is heated until just below its melting point
1.Atmosphere in the process chamber heated to operating temperature and chamber filled with nitrogen
Laser draws one cross section to sinter the powder particles
Un-sintered powder remains to support next layer and then distributed, levelled and sintered again
After cooling, part building cylinder raises to allow part to be removed
Cleaning (excess powder is cleaned off by brushing or air-blowing)
Slicing
system slices the part into slices
3D CAD data ( .stl ) input into system
Data is transferred to machine
Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM)
It consists of...
Production-grade thermoplastic material
Wax (support material)
Part material
Concept models
Functional prototypes
Manufacturing aids
Low-volume end-use parts
How is the part made?
Thin thread-like spools of thermoplastic and support material are used to create each cross section of the part
Uncoiled material is slowly extruded through the dual heated nozzles
Slicing
Extrusion nozzles precisely lay down both support and thermoplastic material upon preceding layers
Extrusion nozzles move in a horizontal X-Y plane.
6.The build platform moves down, building the part layer by layer
Finished part is removed from the build platform and cleaned of its support material
Finishing the part (smooth it, hand sanding, assembly and cosmetic paint)
Filament
PLA (Polyactic Acid) -Non Toxic
ABS
Slicing
3D CAD data input into system
System slices the CAD data into layers
Data is transferred to machine
