Interesting to read and compare the curriculum for the four home nations in English, Maths and Science (Activity 16.4) I expected, having heard people complain for years how prescriptive the national curriculum is, there to be less flexibility. There is guidance on when topics should be introduced but teachers may introduce them sooner (Department for Education (DfE), 2014). Targets for the end of each key stage are stipulated, which I think is good for standardisation across the country. Likewise, despite formal summative exams (Kay, 2013, p.104) such as SATs and league tables being controversial (ST10, p.33), we need a way of ensuring every school's provision is sufficient.
