Crime and Punishment
Death Penalty
-
Mainly crimes such as murder, rape, treason, adultery and war crimes
-
-

Some support the death penalty - "Anyone who strikes a person with a fatal blow is to be put to death"
-
-
-
Restorative justice

-
-
-
-
Important as it helps criminal to take responsibility for their actions and repair the harm they caused
-
-
Good, evil and suffering
Nature of evil actions
For Christians evil is an abuse of free will which they believe God gave them, so they can choose between right and wrong
-
Others claim that evil is caused by influences and experiences in their lives which distract them from God's will
-
-
Christian response
Many causes of suffering have nothing to do with religion, and much more to do with human greed and foolishness
An important principle in Christianity is grace, meaning people can freely receive forgiveness for wrongdoings and not live lives of guilt
-
Why people suffer
-
-
-
Suffering is a part of life, and people have a responsibility to care for and comfort those in need
-
-
Aims of punishment
-
Retribution - making criminals pay for their actions according to the seriousness of their crimes - some Christians agree as God requires Christians to act justly
Deterrence - puts off other people from committing a crime. Not supported by most Christians as a person is punished, and their health and life is not considered
Reformation - helping offenders to understand what they have done - popular as it is how Jesus treated sinners - he always encouraged them to change their ways
What the Bible teaches about punishment - Old Testament punishment was common - people often put to death - sometimes used to support death penalty. Jesus in the New Testament says people should forgive instead of enacting revenge
Forgiveness
-
-
Can be through words or actions, and can be so hard to do that many victims can never forgive
-
Some believe offenders should pay out of their taxes for rehabilitation programs, while others believe it is important for society to forgive criminals and allow them to have a new life
Crime and Forgiveness
Story about the adulterous woman teaches Christians forgiveness and mercy, and to preach a life of purity without sin
Work towards justice and follow the law but be aware that everyone needs forgiveness, but also be aware of your own sins
-
Amnesty international
Says capital punishment is "cruel, inhuman and degrading"
-
Like most Christians, they believe all criminals should be given a chance to reform
