Region: Location location
-common physical characteristics ( physical natural- climate land forms vegetation rivers) human (cultural language, political religious)
3 types of region
functional ( something in the center and all things connected and a part of the same thing.) EX: Delta flight agency, highways
Perceptual: defined by peoples feelings and attitude EX: "the south" southern California, NYC
formal (population, language income, states) measurable characteristics that distinguish them EX: states countries, cities ,sahara desert
Location: where is it--absolute location, relitive location
Population Geography
Rate of natural increase: the difference between the live births and the number of deaths occurring per year (mortality rate- birth rate)

Population pyramid: various age groups in a population (typically that of a country or region of the world), which forms the shape of a pyramid when the population is growing.

Demographic transition model : a period of higher growth rate is giving way to a period of lower of no growth is occurring. this transition happens when economy are transitioning from substance to cash
Stage 1
- poorest stage

-very few countries are still in this stage

-still high birth rate
-population is rising
-somewhat poor
-death rate falls rapidly
-rate of natural increase is going up rapidly
-many children needed for farming

-population starts to become flatter
-good family planning, health, improving status for woman

-activities that envolve turning raw materials into finished products of grater value

-activities that involve distributing goods and or moving them around

-economic activities that involve the harvesting of raw materials
