Air masses + weather+ clouds 1
what
large amounts of air with similar temperature, pressure and humidity (moisture)
air masses around ireland
polar air
: cool in summer, cold in winter with heavy showers and strong winds E.G
Greenland, Aritc
polar air continental
: warms and dry summer, very cold in winter+ sometimes snow
Maritime air
: large air mass that blows towards Ireland from across the Atlantic.
it has a warm air mass
summertime- warm+ rainy weather
winter time - mild and wet weather
this air mass blows from a southwesterly direction
tropical air
: the large body of warm air. This air comes from Africa.
in summer- Hot and dry weather, heatwaves, thunderstorms
in winter- mild and dry
Depression
is an area of low pressure (L). the pressure at the centre is lower than at the edges.
also known as a cyclone and it usually brings changeable weather with rain
isobars lines are lower than 1000
formation
a depression forms when two different air masses meet
a front forms is the boundary where two air masses meet
the front can be a cold front or a warm front
these front form between 40 and 60 norths of the equator over the Atlantic Ocean
a warm front forms when a section of the warm air mass rises up and over the cold air mass
a cold front forms when the cold air forces a wedge/ sector of warm air to rise
A depression will form when these two fronts meet
weather
the bring changeable and unsettled weather to Ireland
as the warm front approches
Before the depression arrives, there are cirrus clouds high in the air.
As the warm front approches the air pressuer falls, stratus clouds fill the sky and continuous rainfall occurs. this occurs because the warm air is rising up over the cold air
as the warm sector approaches
in the warm sector, temperature starts to rise, the air pressure is low because the air is warm
same clouds from and there can be occasional drizzle
as the cold front approaches
When the cold front passes over, the temperatures start to fall. The air pressure begins to increase because the air is cold. Cumulus clouds form brings rainfall. Depression/ fronts bring changeable weather to Ireland
Anticyclone
Is an air mass with High Pressure at the centre. it is also known as " high."
in the centre, the air is descending slowly onto the earth surface forming an area of high pressure
Anticyclones appear on weather maps as a series of lines called Isobars. isobars have numbers grater than 1000
weather that it brings to ireland
The air in the centre is descending towards the surface of the earth. As the air sinks, it starts to warm up. The warm air can now hold more moisture. Condensation does not occur. there are no clouds which mean no rain
the winds if any are very light and blow in a clockwise direction. the isobars are far apart which means the winds are clam. in summer time, anticylone brings hot sunny weather.
in winter time clear skies at night and frost and mild during the day
