A1 Computer Hardware in a Computer System
Types of Computer System
Multi functional Devices
These are devices that can perform multiple functions simultaneously
E.g. A printer with a scanner on
Personal Computers
These are computer devices that can be used for with work or personal agendas
E.g. A laptop that an individual uses at home
Mobile Devices
Mobile devices are often multi-functional as the majority of the time they have a camera, can play music, make phone calls, etc.
E.g. An iPhone or an iPad
Servers
Servers are computers that control multiple devices. As a normal computer does they control everything from logging on to the network
Purpose, Features, and Uses of Internal Components
Multi-Functional Devices
Each of these devices have a processor which is connect to all the features of the device which allows it to carry out all of its functions
Many multi functional devices can connect to a network. This can be done by a wired connection (using an ethernet cable) or through a wireless WiFi connection
Personal Computers
PCs have many internal components such as...
Motheboard
This is the main circuit board that connects to everything
CPU
This component has multiple control units that help calculate and control all the processes carried out
Memory
RAM is the short term memory that saves progress as it goes. RAM is volatile though so whenever the system is switched off, everything is lost
ROM is the long term memory that you save documents to when you click 'save'. It is non-volatile so data is not lost
Mobile Devices
These devices use System on a Chip (SoC), which has the function of a Motherboard and CPU on a small chip
Because these devices are not constantly plugged in the have a battery that has to be regularly recharged
Many mobile devices also have features such as touch screen, camera, microphone, etc.
Servers
Servers have the same components as a PC but they are usually much larger as servers often cover multiple devices
Many servers have 2 of the same components so if one fails the other can carry out the functions
