Infectious
(of a disease or disease-causing organism) liable to be transmitted to people, organisms, etc. through the environment.
Non-Infectious
(of a disease or disease-causing organism) not liable to be transmitted through the environment.
Microorganism:
A microscopic organism, especially a bacterium, virus, or fungus.
Pathogen:
bacterium, virus, or other microorganism that can cause disease.
Bacteria:
A member of a large group of unicellular microorganisms which have cell walls but lack organelles and an organised nucleus, including some which can cause disease.
Fungi:
Any of a group of unicellular, multicellular, or syncytial spore-producing organisms feeding on organic matter, including moulds, yeast, mushrooms, and toadstools.
Virus:
An infective agent that typically consists of a nucleic acid molecule in a protein coat, is too small to be seen by light microscopy, and is able to multiply only within the living cells of a host.
Protozoa:
A phylum or grouping of phyla which comprises the single-celled microscopic animals, which include amoebas, flagellates, ciliates, sporozoans, and many other forms.
Macro organism:
An organism large enough to be seen by the normal unaided human eye - compare microorganism.
Parasite:
An organism which lives in or on another organism (its host) and benefits by deriving nutrients at the other's expense.
