Types of Boundaries
Geometric: straight line boundaries that do not relate to the cultural or physical features of the country
-
Types of States
Compact State: the distance from the center to any border is about the same= improved communications. Ex: Poland
-
Perforated State: Completely surrounds another country so the inside one is very dependent on the perforated one for allowing goods to pass through.
-
-
-
Exclave State: is part of a national state but is separated from the main body of the country to which it belongs to.
Geopolitics
A geopolitical issue is a comparison between the geographical border lines of a country that mark what part of land belongs to who
Examples: 1.The border between the DR and Haiti was about how people were treated unfairly by each other and living in poverty, and how every one wants to tr to the DR 2. The division of the South China sea and how China is taking advantage of it for its own development.

Development
More Developed Countries: The people live in safe conditions, and have a low infant mortality rate because there is no need for larger families. Steady birth rate. The older population has health care and there are enough workers to replace them.
Less Developed Countries: Don't have much support from the govt, and have lots of disease. The infant mortality rate is high because of no health care, and many children are needed for labor work. Because of the high birth rate there is a scare food supply.
Human Development Index: measures the life expectancy and education of countries by ranking them into 4 categories/tiers.
Gross Domestic Product (GDP): calculates the total value of goods produced and services provided in a country, during 1 year. Equation: private consumption + gross investment + government investment + government spending + (exports – imports).
GDP per person (capita): its useful when comparing one country to another, because it shows the relative performance of countries. Equation: GDP- # of ppl in that country
Geographic causes of inequality: determines the difference of wages and income amounts across the world between very poor and very rich people
