Communicable diseases
Viruses
-
-
Replicate themselves using cellular structures, then cell bursts releasing all replicated viruses
-
-
Bacteria
-
Reproduce rapidly inside the body with the right conditions (temperature, nutrients etc)
-
-
Fungi
Some are single celled, others have a body made up of hyphae - thread like structures
Hyphae can grow and penetrate human skin and the surface of plants, causing disease
Hyphae can produce spores, which can be spread to other plants and nimals
How pathogens are spread
-
Air - pathogens can be carried in the air and breathed in - some are carries in droplets produced by coughing or sneezing eg. influenza - causes flu
Direct contact - can be picked up by touching contaminated surfaces, including skin eg. athletes foot is a fungal infection - spread through towels and shower floors etc.
