What is it?
Analyses mixtures of metals in liquid samples
Measures the concentration of metals in samples
Instrument measures the change in intensity
How it works
Focuses a beam of UV light at a specific wavelength through a flame and into a detector
The sample that is being tested is sprayed into the flame
If that metal is present in the sample it will absorb some of the light reducing its intensity
A data system converts the change in intensity into absorbance
As the concentration goes up, absorbance goes up. A calibration curve can be drawn from this

The flame

The flame causes the atom to absorb some of the light from the beam
