Plot
starts out at Oxford university, where Lyra the "orphan" is being looked after. Lord Asriel returns from the North where he was experimenting on Dust, which the church thinks is original sin. Dust forms in children when they get older and their daemon stops shifting.
Lyra's friend Roger is taken by the Gobblers. Lyra meets Mrs. Coulter who takes her away from the college but before that the master gives her an alethiometer
Mrs. Coulter is abusive to Lyra so she escapes her house with the help of the gyptians. Ma Costa tells her Mrs. Coulter and Lord Asriel are her parents
meets Iorek, helps Iorek get his armor back from the people of the town, he helps them in return
Lyra and Iorek discover that the Gobblers have been separating the children from their daemons. They find Tony whose daemon was replaced by a dried piece of fish, and then bury him after he dies. Lyra is captured by some traders shortly after who sell her to the Gobblers.In the prison camp of the Gobblers, she meets Roger and Billy Costa. They form a plan to escape but she is caught during the escape and is sent to have her daemon separated from her, but Mrs. Coulter saves her
Lyra escapes from her mother and finds the gyptians and the rest of her friends and heads toward Svalbard. In Svalbard, Iorek fights Iofur because Lyra pretends to be Iorek's daemon and convinces Iofur to fight Iorek and Iorek wins.
Lyra travels to Lord Asriel's observatory where Roger is being held captive, Lyra tries to give Lord Asriel the alethiometer but he refuses it, Lord Asriel sacrifices Roger to open a portal to another world
