Research with Children
Where children is too young to give consent of any kind, the parents must determine whether they will allow their child to participate
The informed consent form must be signed by the parents on behalf of their children. However, bear in mind that, even if the parents give their permission, ultimately the child has the last word: if they don't want to participate, or want to withdraw from the study at any time, then their wishes must be respected
Every research project that uses human participants should have an informed consent form- that is read and signed by each participant
Confidentiality
Information obtained about a participant during an investigation is confidential unless otherwise agreed in advance
Participants have a right to expect that information they provide will be treated confidentially and if published, will not be identifiable as theirs
In the event that confidentiality cannot be guaranteed, the participant must be warned of this in advance of agreeing to participate
The best way to maintain confidentiality is by minimizing the number of people who see or collect the data
Debriefing
Provide the participants with any necessary information to complete their understanding of the nature of the research
For instance, once they completed your experiment, immediately give them a debriefing form or debrief them verbally
Allow them to ask anything they wanted to know about what they have been going through in the experiment
-
Deception
Misleading the participants and withholding information is unacceptable if the participants are likely to object or show unease once debriefed
Intentional deception of the participants over the purpose and general nature of the investigation should be avoided
-
Protection from Harm
Protects participants from harm, both physically and psychologically during the investigation
Psychological harm - avoid making participants feel stressed, embarrassed, depressed, anxious or fearful, unless they have given their permission for you to do this to them
