cell biology
stem cells
- theses stem cell can be used to produce clones (identical copies) of whole plants quickly and cheaply
- they can be used to grow more plants of rare species (to prevent then being wiped out)
- throughout the plants entire life cells in the meristem tissues can differentiate into any type of plant cell.
- stem cells can also be used to grow crops of identical plants that have desired features from farmers for example disease resistance
- in plants stem cells are found in the meristems (parts of the plant where growth occurs)
-
chromosomes and mitosis
- each chromosome carries a large number of genes. different genes control the development of different characteristics e.g. hair colour
- body cells normally have two copies of each chromosome- one from the organism mother and one rom the father so humans have two copies of chromosome 1 two copies of chromosome 2.
- chromosomes are coiled up lengths of DNA molecules
- most cells in your body have a nucleus. the nucleus contains your genetic material in the form of chromosomes
