Quantitative VS Qualitative Data
pg 58-60
Quantitative
information expressed numerically that captures the 'who, what, when, and where of behaviour'
Strengths
allows researchers to summarize vast sources of info
easier to make comparisons across categories & time
standardisation allows for more replication
similar/same answers = reliable
less personal biases
Limitations
captures narrow range of information
impossible to capture normal behavior/real responses if placed in artificial environment
lacks depth
no opportunity to develop research beyond original boundaries
Qualitative
non-numeric data that expresses the quality of a relationship; explores the 'why' of behavior
Strengths
allows the subject to act/talk freely
understanding of complex reasons of behavior
greater freedom to study ppl in their normal settings
data allows for more realistic feel of the world
Limitations
data may not be able to be applied widely
difficult to compare qualitative data across time & location bc two groups are never qualitatively the same
depth & detail of data makes it more difficult to replicate
low reliability
