AIMS OF PUNISHMENT
Reparation
Repairing the damage done through crime
e.g. community clean up schemes for vandals allow offenders to attempt to make up for the crime they committed
Protection
To protect society from becoming victims of crime
e.g. a prison sentence removes criminals from society
Vindication
To show that the government deserve respect and should be followed
Allows people to have confidence in the law
Makes offenders respect the role it plays in creating order
Reformation
Addresses the cause of crime so they can understand why their action was an offence
e.g. it can be through counselling, therapy, education or training
Deterrence
To put people off doing the crime
Historically, this was the main purpose off the death penalty
The punishment needed to be worthy enough to warn others in society not to commit the crime
Retribution
Revenge - getting even with the person who has committed the crime
For some victims this is the only way they feel justice has been done
