transportation in the body 1
whats in our blood
plasma
the liquid part of the blood
pale yellow colour and is mostly made of water
plasma transports many dissolved chemicals around the body. these chemicals may be
useful materials, such as foods and oxygen
wastes, such as carbon dioxide and salts
Transports heat from one part of the body to another. Heat is produced by chemical reactions in all our body cells. by transporting heat our blood plays an important role in maintaining our body temperature at 37 degrees
also carries red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets
how plasma affects body temperature
when we are too hot, extra blood is sent to our skin (especially the face causing it to go red). this allows more heat to pass out of out body and we cool down. this can happen when we are ill. in this case our body temperature may rise. the high temperature helps to destroy the bacteria and viruses that are causing us to be ill
when we are to cold, blood vessels in our skin become smaller. blood also moves from our extremities to our core. this means we lose less heat from our body
red blood cells
Red blood cells are made in bone marrow located in the centre of bones. Red blood cells contain a red-coloured chemical called
Haemoglobin
. to make this me need iron. our blood contains huge numbers of red blood cells
Haemoglobin and therefore red blood cells carries oxygen.
path of oxygen
Oxygen enters our red blood cells in the lungs. It attaches to haemoglobin in the red cells. when blood reaches cells in other parts of our body e.g. muscles or brain, the haemoglobin releases the oxygen into these cells
white blood cells
are also made in bone marrow. they fight infection
some white blood cells surround microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses and destroy them
Other white blood cells form proteins called antibodies. Antibodies help destroy micro-organisms that have entered the body. Antibodies are essential. AIDS is a condition where the body does not produce any antibodies
platelets
Formed in bone marrow when large cells break down into smaller pieces. Platelets help to form blood clots. in this way, they help prevent loss of blood and microorganisms from entering the body
circulatory system or transport system is made up of:
fluid
- blood
a pump
- the heart
tubes
- Blood vessels
functions of the human circulatory system
to transport food and oxygen to all the cells in the body
to remove waste produced in the cells
help control body temperature
