THE SENSORY REGISTER
System that preserves the information for a few seconds.
The sensory register takes in sensory information through your five senses, also needs to clear quickly to prevent sensory "double exposure". It acts as a filter, keeping out extraneous and unimportant information

LONG TERM MEMORY
Examples
"M.D." had trouble remembering the names of fruits and vegetabes
people oftem came up with words that were similar in meaning to the rightword before they finally recalled it
To understang the organization of long-term memory, then, we need to understand what kinds of information can be stored there
Types of memories
Semantic memory
Are internal representations of the world, independent of any particular context. Includes
facts, rules and concepts
.
Episodic memory
Are internal representations of
personally experienced events
. They allow you to travel back in time.
Procedural memory
Internal representations of stimulus-reponse connections. They prescribe
mechanical actions
.
Things like huging!
LTM is the heart of the mental storage system.
SHORT TERM MEMORY
Chunks
A meaningful unit of information, may be comprised of smaller units
Information is usually encoded acoustically
STM also holds material that has been retrieved from LTM for temporary use.
Rehersal
The repetition of information for the purpose of improving subsequent retention
Recency effect
The tendency for items at the end of a list to be well recalled
Primacy Effect
The tendency for items at the beginning of a list to be well recalled.
Serial position effect
The tendency for recall of the first and last items on a list to surpass recall of
items in the middle of the
Serial position effect

:pencil2:
If your license plate is 236MPL...
you might think of 236 maples. :check:
Visual imagery
:
When you create a visual image to memorize some information
Encode
When you try to find patterns and codes to memorize the information
Pay attention!
We fail to remember because
we never actually encoded information in the first place.
Take your time
You need to take it easy, to have patience and take the time to see all the details of the information
:star: Scientist have investigate how to improve the memory for a long time!
Like the one with worms!
What was that about?
Scientist tried to feed some worms with some others. The worms-food know something, so if the worms eat they could "absorb" their knowledge.
But it didn't work
anyway.
Following McConnell, 1962: You can actually eat your teacher´s memories to be more intelligent. Delicious!

STM is sometimes called
active
or working
memory, becouse is the one that we are using all the time
18 Seconds!
LTM has no practical limits
The information must be ORGANIZED and INDEXED .
WHAT IS?
IMPORTANCE OF EMOTIONS WHEN LEARNING!
