Prior to the 1990s, waste management was inherently linear and invisible, with surplus materials stored in the wheelie bin and then transported away. But recent developments mean that local authorities have permeated the home, and in the process, the relationship between local authorities, households, and waste collection has been transformed. We are now encouraged to engage with our waste - cleaning, seperating, and storing them (often within the home). (Bulkeley and Gregson, 2009)
