Trailrun or hike in Forest Park (5min drive or 10 min bike from downtown)
Find in the park: Pintock Mansion for an epic lookout. Stonehouse (aka the witches house)

Drive up the Gorge. Hamilton Peak hike, check out some waterfalls. Bring a picnic and hang by Beacon Rock. (40ish min drive)
Hood River for some kiteboarding, river beach time, berry picking along the way. (1hr)
Government Camp/Mt. Hood. Hike to Mirror Lake or Sandy Park Mtn. biking. Recommend "Hiking Project" or "Mountain Bike Project" Apps (1hr)
Have a full day?
Drive to Cannon Beach for a quick dip in the Pacific (1.5 hr)

First thing's first.. get the lay of the land.
Portland is divided W vs. E by the Willamette river (pronounced rhyming "damn-it, will-am-it") and N vs. S by Burnside Ave on the West side and Broadway on the East side.
Most people refer to the city by it's quadrants:
NW: Cool downtown, prime shopping & food scene, streets run from Bernside North alphabetically.
NE: nice neighborhoods with pockets of fun dining. Mississippi St, Alberta Ave
SW: Corporate City
SE: Hispter central, distileries, more industrial feel
