What is Frictionless Data, why is it needed and how can Schmidt Futures support it?
What's the problem?
Using data to drive insight or drive applications is central to our digital economy, to creating public value, or solving societal problems
But there's a lot of friction in getting and sharing data ... [AI won't work without data for example ...]
We have no standardized way to transport data between tools and applications - ad hoc and error prone
What can we do?
We want to standard basic data "packaging" because this would massively reduce frictrion: "onload/offload" and allow for data automation ...
Enable an Ecosystem => data collaboratives ... (containers allowed for much more complex production systems ...) [ like a common language that would allow for more collaboration]
-
Situation: the ability to acquire and combine data is central to incraesing amount of research, enterprise, government etc ("data driven insight / apps etc). But a large amount of data acquisition and processing is bespoke (manual or with one-off scripting) and therefore slow, error-prone and not scalable.
Complication: This slows down progress. Insight is less reliable, collaboration is harder esp across groups ...
What scalable options are there to reduce friction in sharing, using and collaborating on data, and would support greater, releiable automation of these processes (and at different scales both large and small)?
