Disillusionment of dreams and Emptiness of attaining false dreams
The American Dream
The american dream isn't attainable
Nick aspires for the dream, he works hard and honestly for it, he is the poorest of the group and becomes disgusted by the things people do to maintain the picture perfect "American Dream"
the american dream is just a facade
Gatsby has the dream but in reality it is built on lies and dishonesty
Even when people seem to have reached the american dream they are still wanting more
for example Daisy has the dream but pines for something (someone) else
Money buys happiness
Daisy searches for money: she married it: but it did no please her she ended up wanting something more
Gatsby gains money by unhonest means and is happy at first. His new found wealth provides him with a home and friends (party guests) but as soon as the money is gone (Gatsby's death) he has no friends to be found (except Nick)
Honesty of your fellow man
Nick quickly realizes that neither Tom or Gatsby were the men they let out they were; instantly breaking Nick faith in his fellow man
Tom is in love with another women and doesn't hide the fact from anyone including his wife's cousin creating a character how is too prideful to see the full extent of damage that he himself was causing
Gatsby is most definitely not who he said he was. He is not an oxford man and his family is not wealthy. He came into wealth as a bootlegger and other illegal activities. His lies push his fellow man away creating a very isolated character
The dream of a Happy ending
No one in this book has a happy ending
Gatsby dies
Nick and Jordan never end up together, neither does Gatsby and Daisy
Nick leaves West Egg and all that he knew there
Daisy and Tom end up together; living a life for the public that they both truly did not want
The dream of true love
Nick dreams of love with Jordan
But as the situation becomes more and more dire Nick see's Jordan as part of the world of social elite that he has come to dispise
Their relationship ends before it could even properly begin
Both Gatsby and Daisy are so in love that they can't help themselves
Even though Daisy loves Gatsby so much she could never leave Tom and his sense of security
They never get to live out a life together because Daisy valued the facade of a happy marriage over true love
