World War I
Causes of WWI
The cause of World War I was MAIN (Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, and Nationalism.
The first conflict came from the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. He was killed by a Serbian group called the "black hand." His death was important because it allowed Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia which created a web of alliances. Russia declared war on Austria-Hungary, Germany declared war on Russia, And France as well as Britain declared war on Germany which started WWI.
-
Militarism- A belief or desire of a country should stay strong and capable as well as be prepared to fight and defend national interests. ( All wanted new land but in order to get it they had to build up their army. ) Example: The Dreadnaught. Germany was jealous of the new tech and wanted to expand in order to gain new land.
Alliances- A union or relationship between two countries or organizations that come together for a mutual benefit ( Helping each other if one is attacked. ) Example: Central Powers- Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy. Russia, France, Great Britain, United States.
Imperialism- A policy in which you extend your power using diplomacy and military. Example: The build up of tension in and outside of Europe because the British had amazing technology for that time period that could outdo others instantly. Therefore, everyone else had to scramble to create better technology than the other in a constant competition.
-
Nationalism- Political independence in a country and superiority over other countries. (Nationalism also inspired the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand) This was because Serbians wanted land from Austria-Hungary where many Serbians lived but they'd refused. Thus why they killed Franz Ferdinand.

Treaty of Versailles
The treaty of Versailles was important because it was a peace treaty that had ended WWI and ended the state war between Germany and the Allied powers. It was signed the 11th hour, the 11th day, the 11th month, and was signed in the year of 1919.
Germany was forced to return Alsace-Lorraine as well as give up land which decreased Germany's power. Germany was also restricted on military machines such as tanks, submarines, cars, and aircraft. Germany was forced to minimize their army which took a toll on building strength. Germany was also guilty of beginning WWI and this was called the reparations and or "Guilt War Clause." Then Germany was forced to pay $33 billion for damage repairs.
The reasons why the Treaty of Versailles failed was because the allies who one the war couldn't agree on how to treat Germany after the war. Then, Germany did not agree on the Terms of Reparations because they found them unreasonable. And last but not least, article 231, the war guilt clause was not accepted by Germany and created resentment with a sense of nationalism. This also led the Germans to create WW2 in the rise of power.
