City-States: since cities are where people exchange ideas, they were an ideal breeding ground for an intellectual revolution
Wealthy merchant class: because city-states were small, a high percentage of citizens could be involved in politics. Merchants dominated politics
Classical heritage of Greece and Rome: scholars wanted to return to the learning of the Greeks and Romans
Some of the kings, merchants and nobles encouraged new literature and art like Francis I, Henry VIII and Charles V.
Martin Luther and the 95 theses influenced a lot on questioning the power of the church, and the Medici family support of the arts and humanities also influenced a lot on the growth of the Renaissance
