      - Contains 3 bones
        
        ischium
        
        pubis
        
        ilium
        
        This is considered the largest part of the hip bone and contributes to the superior part of the acetabulum
        
        Thick medial portions (columns) for weight bearing and thin, wing0like, posterolateral portions, the alae that provide broad surfaces for the fleshy attachment of muscles
        
        The body of the ilium joins the pubis and ischium to form the acetabulum. Anteriorly, the ilium has stout anterior superior and anterior inferior iliac spines that provide attachment for ligaments and tendons of lower limb muscles
      - Three bones are formed from the primary center of ossification; five secondary centers of ossification appear later
        
        at birth the three primary bones are joined by hyaline cartilage
        
        In children, these three bones: ilium, ischium, pubis are incompletely ossified
        
        During puberty these bones (ilium, ischium, pubis) are separated by a Y-shaped triradiate cartilage
        
        Triradiate cartilage is centered in the acetabulum.. although it has two parts of the ischiopubic rami that will fuse between 15 and 17 years of age.
