The single market sets high standards for food and other goods, its aim is not to create bland uniform products which are identical from one end of the EU to the other. On the contrary, to maintain diversity, it ensures that genuine regional and specialised products remain part of the wide choice available to consumers
Our freedom and right to work, study and retire in another EU country or just to visit other member states is part of the human face of the single market. When travelling, we can buy as much as we like to take home so long as it is for personal consumption
Deepening European integration and widening EU membership have gone hand-in-hand since the foundation of the Union. Each successive enlargement has brought benefits to Europe’s citizens and new opportunities for its businesses. In between times, the EU has created a customs union, a single market and a single currency. As a result, people, goods, services and money move around within the EU as freely as within one country
Every citizen is a consumer and the EU takes great care to protect their health, safety and economic well-being. As the single market lifts barriers to cross-border trade, as the service sector expands and as the Internet and electronic commerce grow, it is important that all citizens across the 25 member states benefit from the same high level of consumer protection
