CHROMATOGRAPHY
Definition
-
-
Subtle differences in a compound's partition coefficient result in differential retention on stationary phase and changing the seperation
May be either preperative or analytical. Preperative: to seperate the components of mixture for further use. Analyical: done with smaller amounts of material and use for measure the relative proportions of analytes in a mixture.
Technique for seperating mixtures into their components to analyze, identify, purify and/or quantify the mixture of components.

Classification
Planar:Stationary phase held in a narrow tube through which the mobile phase is forced under pressure.
-
-
Column:Stationary phase supported on a flat plate or the interstices of a paper and the mobile phase moves through stationary phase by capillary action.

How Chromatography works
- Compound placed on stationary phase.
- Mobile phase passes through stationary phase.
- Mobile phase solubilizes the components.
- Mobile phase carries individual components a certain distance through the stationary phase, depends on their attraction to both of the phases.
