- - - - A woman is both aware of her reception of the world and experience with how that exactly coincides with how men perceive her. The woman is aware as to how men see her, and although she sees herself one way, how she is perceived can change the way in which she carries herself.
    - - Perspective is a concept that can be applied to an object and how it is seen, but how the object sees back as well, in a sense.
        
        When you apply this idea to selfies, idealized portrayals of an individual, we are given an example as to how the self is projected in various forms and how each of these varying forms differ in how they are looked at and seen.
- - - - The power of the self is evidenced in this quote: through Lily's immeasurable beauty we see that instead of being a passive piece of eye candy, she is instead bestowed an immense amount of power, solely due to her looks.
    - - The emphasis that is placed on this desire for perfection is something that can be so paralyzing to those of extreme vanity that it goes beyond fear. This view of the self, in Lily's case, is such an inherently unique experience (to her) so much so that her view of the self is completely inhibited due to her inability to fathom some sort of "disfigurement".
        
        Due to Lily's inability to view herself in her thoughts, she is thus, blind to an actual legitimate version of herself and exemplifies Machato's ideas of "living alone and in darkness" because of this. This is further seen when Lily is convinced that "you wouldn't understand," isolating herself not only from her own self, but others as well.
- - - - This idea of the forbidden when it comes to the visual emphasizes the tendency of people to lean towards the provocative, to look at what must not be looked at, such is the case in "Difficult At Parties."
    - - These two quotes combined give us an idea as to the many things a face can be: simple, complex, an object, a socket, or a source of power. When looking at the visual, it is important to note the many forms a face can take. We see not only how this idea of perception have evolved, but how the visual, how it is seen and sees itself, morphs to conform both the viewer and the viewed
- - - - The same as with Kim Kardashian, Lily's body and beauty do not truly belong to herself as she is only using these "tools" of hers to give them to the right man--she is not truly belonging to herself.
- - - - When taking into account the self, it is important to consider the perception of the self to others. Whether it be through selfies or simply in everyday life, the perceptions of others can be projected onto oneself to the point that they can become a reality.
        
        Although Lily is aware of her beauty and uses it to her advantage, this advantage benefits men, in that they only desire her for her looks--in getting married, these men will, in a sense, own Lily; both her beauty and her body. Their perception of Lily, as a beautiful woman, is projected on her so much so that she becomes nothing more than that: a beautiful woman to be claimed through marriage.
        
        In Lily's case, the face can be seen as is quoted here" a source of power that can transfix--however, it is but just an object. Albeit, an object that can view back, but an object nonetheless.
        
        Kim Kardashian is a prime example of a woman's body not belonging to her own: she profits from her image, however, in her book Selfish it is stressed that many of the images are "never before seen." In exposing her provocative self to the public eye in such a manner, coupled with her sex tape, Kim Kardashian makes her image and self public enough to the point it can no longer be deemed her own.
    - - Although a victim of sexual assault, in this tale, the woman is the projector of her trauma, in which she partakes in the visual to detatch further from her own horrid experiences and thus, herself.
    - - The careful balance that exists between the projection of others and the view of oneself is one that is easy to upset, as is the case in "Eight Bites." It is important to note that this altering of the self is the most extreme version of the impact that projection can have. In this, there is a focus placed on the victim of the projection.
        
        Through Berger's ideas of how women must carry themselves in terms of how the world perceives them, there is an emphasis placed on the pressures of the woman in "Eight Bites" and the need to cater to societal standards of beauty that pressure her into her surgery.
  - - - With an emphasis placed on ego, through the lens of the visual, this quote can be applied to the importance of vanity when it comes to the art of selfies. With ego, a selfie demands to be looked at--the lack of vanity and/or ego can cause a selfie-taker to not post the selfie at all, taking away from the selfie and making it just a picture. Ego is an important element in the idea of selfhood, the visual, and namely, selfies.
        
        Selfie culture is centralized on placing your best foot (or rather, face) forward, capturing what you would consider to be the most “you” version there is.
    - - The idea of confrontation in terms of 'selfhood' can be applied to how a person can never 'truly' know what they look like--this perception of oneself (and in this case) lack thereof, can leave an individual both blinded and alone.

        From the beginning of her career, Kim Kardashian has profited from the raw projection of her self, which, when looked at in relation to "Difficult at Parties", is important to note how empowering this aspect of the self can be

  - - - A selfie, by definition, is a photograph one has taken of oneself (most times, by oneself), shared on a social media platform.
        
        Selfies are more than faces, which in themselves are more than power and transfixations. They are a form in itself, and thus, are an entirely new way to understand the visual. The selfie is a modern way of capturing the self in a way that had not previously been done before.
        
        Selfies are put out into the world with the purpose of being seen. And not only are they seen, they see back as well: at the desires of the viewers, because, after all, we want not only to be in selfies but to be them. This idea of being inspired by the visual is an entirely new experience in of itself.
      - In the case of Kim Kardashian, the idealized version of herself is all that is captured as her fame is based on her image and her image alone.
