Learner Agency (Students have a sense of control of things that happen around them)
Play based learning
Activity stations while teachers run reading and maths workshops
Students having a voice for the activities they take part in
Shift for teachers to become listens
Ownership of learning from teacher to learner
Higher accountibilty but there is a partnership between teacher and student
Agency to help students to develop knowledge and skills, promotes creativity, working in groups, questioning. Which in turn sets them up for success in their lives
Why should we provide these opportunities? Provides opportunities for students to follow their passions which in turn promotes engagement. Giving students a chance to follow their passions can set them up for life
Students following their passion makes their learning relevant to them
Communicating back to the students
How do we take ownership for student learning
What are some examples of Learner Agency?
Learning Journal
Clearfile with progressions at the start, Visual so the students can see where they are at. For example colour code. Didnt work as it was time consuming
Glue in sheets work better in a project book
Students can see where they are going and if they are starting on the next level
Students can use it in their student led conferences
Shows that the students are responsible for their learning
The progressions need to be clear so that everyone knows what to be taught/learned
Progressions come from a mixture of NZC and reading and writing progressions
They need to be adapted for your school
Format is the same from Junior through to senior
Students need to understand growth mindset
Establishing learner qualities
Writing Sample
Students know that they are getting judged
The students have no interest
Alternative
Writing blast
Teacher marks and then gives feedback which influences next personal goal
Students choice around the text form Eg: Procedural, making scones, making toast, getting ready
Well set up with a plan and looking at another piece of writing using that structure
PD with literacy leader to set the teacher up for their writing blast what to look for and what to teach
Make sure the students know what they need to do: eg examples so the students know what they need to include in their writing
Students should know what the sucess criteria is. If the students can tell you what the success criteria is then they are ready to write
They know this by looking at examples, so they know what is expected
NZC
Key compentencies
Pg 38: Let the students initiate themselves, set personal goals, Manage time frames, Develop strategies for self monitoring: what does success look like.
Co- constructing rubrics, making the time, then students can do self and peer assessment
Teacher can provide prompts for the students to use, Once it is set up its worthwhile
Student agency Support
Evaluation Associate Matrix
http://www.evaluate.co.nz/inline/files/Student_capability_matrix.pdf
Points out the teacher and student role
Understanding that they students will give you feedback and be open to feedback
Building learning focused relationship
Handing over control
Clarity about the learning
Knowing what the progressions are
WALTS in workshops & success criteria
Look at what the child is doing rather than the teacher
Child needs to know what success looks like
Assessment Literacy
Students knowing what they are going to be assessed on
ARBS
Linc ed
Its online learning progression
Students can post evidence (like appraisal)
It spits out report
Accessible to parents
Teachers can see where there are gaps
A percentage of the day is learner driven
Students know what is complusory, they know when they are expected to be with the teacher and then the rest of the day they are driving their own day
In new entrance classroom they use maracas to change over
This is in a classroom with TWO teachers, not one!
