Hasan Minhaj's
Homecoming King
-public discourse published in May 2017 and filmed in January 2017
Hasan Minhaj wants to inform his audience about the racism he faced when he was younger and how that still affects him to this day
Minhaj uses personal experiences to engage his audience in a sense that they will probably relate to Hasan and what he has gone through
Minhaj's primary audience will be the people from Davis, predominately white people and his secondary audience will be people with a Netflix subscription
In Minhaj's standup comedy he mentions that when 9/11 happened, he was threatened to get killed because he is Muslim
Because Minhaj introduces such an important topic through a standup comedy, his audience is expected to take this topic lightly since it does include some humorous parts
With Minhaj's main use of pathos, he is letting the audience have an emotional response as he goes on and tells the all the racist things he has encountered
Hasan Minhaj faces racism when he was supposed to go to prom with a white girl named Bethany Reed and when the day of prom came, she was taking pictures with another guy because Minhaj wouldn't "fit in" since he is brown
At the time that this public discourse was filmed and published, Donald Trump was elected as president and along with his presidency came a lot of racial ideals which relate to Minhaj because he suffered racism
Minhaj uses comedy as a way to introduce an important topic in a lighthearted way
Thomas Holt "'Knowledge is Power': The Black Struggle for Literacy"- academic discourse published in 1990
African American historian who wants to inform his audience of how important education is and how hard African Americans worked to receive this education
Education system and the community must work together in order to succeed
Uses pathos as a form to engage his audience to sympathize for those who faced racism
"till, at last, one of the children told me she had eaten nothing for two days. Yet they have never once failed to bring me their wood money" (Holt 4)- example of pathos
if audience have an emotional response then it's easier for the audience to understand what Holt is trying to say
Uses logos to provide factual information to show his audience how hard it was for African Americans to construct this education system as well as to maintain it when whites made it almost impossible
"the average was $10.32 for each white student but only $2.89 for each black" (Holt 6)- example of logos, uses mainly logos
primary audience are those who were present in his speech, those interested in literacy and who are highly educated
Blacks believed that the only way they will be successful is if they receive an education
