Individual has a less common characteristic within the population, for example, only 1% of people have Schizophrenia
Quantitative, easy to analyse, statistical tests
High IQ is abnormal
Depression is too common to view as abnormal
Deviation from Social Norms
Individual breaks the implicit rules of society such as wearing their clothes inside out
Ethnocentric, in the context of western cultures hallucinations would be viewed as abnormal but they are encouraged in African cultures as a way of communicating with ancestors
Failure to Function Adequately
Individual fails to meet the demands of everyday life
Individual differences, for example, a traveller never holds down a long term job
