Kindergarten English Progress Goals
Reading
I would do formative reading assessments throughout the semester such as listen to them read words, pages, or booklets during the lessons. I would then take note of their abilities to sound out CVC words and recognize site words in weekly evaluations. I would put more emphasis on the formative assessments from the end of the semester or unit that truly show their progress.
I would do summative reading assessments at the end of each unit. I'd ask the students to individually read a few pages out of one of the stories to me. I would give them a check plus if they can read smoothly, a check if they can read well but struggle a little, and a check minus if they cannot read or sound out hardly any of the words. Then I would keep this for my records. I would compare this to my notes of their most recent formative in class assessments and then would determine if they get a super happy face, happy face, or ok face..
Writing
I would examine their handwriting from the beginning of the semester to the end of the semester by looking at their writing notebooks. Neat handwriting would require that they wrote on the lines, formed the letters correctly, used proper finger spaces if writing a sentence, began sentences with capital letters, and remembered punctuation. I would occasionally ask them questions about the different types of punctuation during the lesson as a formative assessment. When deciding their report information, I would put more emphasis on the writing assignments from the end of the semester than from the beginning of the semester.
Speaking
Oral Vocabulary Recognition
I would do formative assessments during the lessons to see if students can name the key vocabulary for the unit. I would do this through matching games and vocabulary reviews where I show a flashcard and they name the word. I would take note of who is readily able to name the words and who is struggling. I would put more emphasis on formative assessments at the end of the unit rather than the beginning.
I would do a summative assessment at the end of each unit where I individually show students pictures of key vocabulary words and they name the words. Then I would compare these to the formative assessments to determine if the students get a super happy face, happy face, or ok face.
Speaking in Sentences
I would do formative assessments during the lessons to see if students can ask and respond to key questions in a complete sentence using the sentence frame and key vocabulary. I would give every student the opportunity to ask and answer the question. We would do this with a hot potato game where the students pass a ball around and the one who has the ball has to answer the question then ask the next person. They would try to get it to the end of the circle in a certain amount of time.
I would do a summative assessment at the end of each unit where I would individually ask the students some key questions and they have to answer in a complete sentence. Then they would have to ask me a key question. Then I would compare these to the formative assessments to determine if the students get a super happy face, happy face, or ok face
Listening
I would observe students on a daily basis to see if they are able to listen to and follow my directions.
I would do formative assessments during the class to see if students can listen to and understand questions I ask or words I say.
I would do some summative assessments at the end of the semester where the student has to listen to a question and understand it well enough to respond and where they would have to circle the picture of a key vocabulary word that I read.
Phonemic Awareness
I would do formative assessments during the lessons throughout the semester on whether or not the students recognized individual letter sounds. I would do these by holding up flashcards with individual letters on them and asking them to say the letters, having students find the flashcard that matches the letter sound I say, and having students sound out each letter of the CVC words individually.
I would do a summative assessment at the end of the semester that would consist of two parts. First, I would individually ask students to say the sound of some letters I select then I would ask the class to circle the letter sound that I say. I would compare the summative assessments to the formative assessments to determine if the students get a super happy face, happy face, or ok face.
Motor Skills
I would save all their classwork sample that they colored. I would review them at the end of the semester to see if they were able to color neatly and in the lines.
I would observe how they hold scissors and if they cut paper during lessons and take note.
I would observe how they hold their pencils during writing lessons and take note.
