Turtles All The Way Down:By John Green
Themes
The theme is the idea of the story and what the book revolves around.
The idea and main theme of the book is the Billionaire mystery.Davis Pickett Sr disappeared the day before he was going to be charged with money fraud and be sent to jail for more than 20 years.
One of the themes in this book is mental Illness and Identity which is a new thing to talk about in the reading industry as it what was thought of as a very touchy subject but since John Green has had experience with it he's made the book so amazing.
Another one of the Themes is Power and Wealth and how the Pickett family has a large fortune that has been passed through the family. This is an important theme because of Davis Pickett Sr disappearing without a trace and leaving all his money behind only to be left to the family pet Tua the Tuatara. This decision was made because Davis Sr believed his sons were not worthy and not responsible enough.Davis Jr just wished his dad to love him and care for him.
Friendship is something that you treasure forever and someone thats reliable. Aza and daisy have that special bond where they understand that without each other they would have nothing and with each other they are everything.
Jealousy
Plot
The plot revolves around the Billionaire Mystery when Davis Pickett Sr disappears without a trace the day before the police charge him with fraud.Davis' son inherits his money but later in the book it reveals that Davis Pickett Sr left all his money to their pet Tuatara and helped fund the Tuatara society. This leads to Davis and his younger brother leaving to their uncles and live in a farm in a far away town.Davis and Aza kiss and Aza becomes extremely anxious about the millions of cells that are not hers that just entered her system and she develops a paranoia of kissing.
There is also a side plot that is around Aza's anxiety and OCD.This is a great thing to talk about in the book because John Green himself also has Anxiety and OCD.It's a very touchy subject but John Green handled it very well.
I like this plot because it is very intriguing and interesting and has many plot twists that you don't expect and John Green has made it so that the plot is realistic and also relates to himself.
When Aza's built up emotions and angers are expressed while Aza and Daisy are riding Harold Aza finally realises the barriers she has forced into their friendship from her mental illness causing her friendship with Daisy to fall apart.Their argument comes to an end when they are involved in a car crash.
Characters are what makes the book more interesting and they are what cause the drama and the conflict in the book.
Characters
Main Characters
Davis Pickett Jr is one of the main characters that is featured and he is also Davis Pickett Sr's son and he continues to believe he is alive until after a while he gives up on all hopes of ever finding him.Davis' family are very wealthy because his father owns the largest engineering firm in Indianapolis. He is in an awkward relationship with Aza that consists of lots of talking and very rarely a kiss.
Aza is the main protagonist in this book and she narrates the entirety of the book and everything is talked about through her perspective. Aza has anxiety and OCD especially around 80 million small cells that are running through her body after kissing Davis which she now is extremely paranoid about. She also has a fear of getting C.Diff an infection that can be easily passed through small cuts or wounds such as Aza's cut finger that she now puts a fresh plaster o every couple of hours to keep it from infection.
Davis Pickett Sr is mentioned many times throughout the book but isn't featured often because he is in hiding for the most of the book and when he is in it he is dead. His character is very well thought through because its your typical rich white guy that doesn't pay his bills
Daisy is Aza's best friend and the two have been together since they were little kids. But with all the drama happening in their lives their friendship starts to fall apart and while arguing in the car they suffer a car crash and are put into hospital for many weeks.Daisy loves venting her feelings into her obsession of writing star wars fan-fiction. Aza eventually finds out about it and is confused at first but then accepts daisy for who she is and what she likes.
Side/Not as Important Characters
Aza's Mum is talked about often from Aza's point of view especially about hiding secrets from her and also her venting her feelings through loneliness and shooing her mum away.
Mychal is Daisy's boyfriend that she doesn't spend much time with but they interact at school often and he is a very talented art student. He is only Daisy's boyfriend for a short period of time only because Mychal couldn't handle Daisy
Noah(Davis' younger brother) This character is not very important in the book because he is only mentioned and featured only a few times. He is very sad and becomes depressed over time because of his dad's death when he realises he just wanted a real dad that loved him and he got even more depressed when he realised his dad wasn't coming back.
Dr Singh is Aza's Therapist that helps her through cognitive and behavioural therapy and medication to help Aza with her anxiety and OCD.Each time Aza sees Dr Singh she assures her that everything is okay and that her thoughts don't control her and that she can be her own person she wants to be
Conflict
The conflict in this book is the characters finding out each others secrets and how the mystery remains unsolved for the most of the book.
Another part of the conflict is Davis and Aza's relationship falling through because of Aza's paranoia and anxiety about Microbiomes and Infections such as C.Diff that can be easily spread through kissing.
All of Aza's irrational fears and compulsions are apart of her mental health and how what has happened throughout her life has changed her.For example her dad died 7 years before the book from a heart attack while mowing the lawns. This could relate to how Aza is scared about how she doesn't know who she really is and how her life is just like a downwards spiral that never stops and just keeps infinitely spinning.
Aza isn't confident about herself and she doesn't have good thoughts especially because she thinks she can't control her own thoughts.Or at least thats whats she says. These thoughts and her anxiety around others make her relationships with people harder than usual because she realises after a while that her illness is building barriers between her and her friends.
Setting
This is set in 2018 and has many of the references to the "struggles" of a teenager like homework, relationships, friends and most importantly social media.
The town its set in is Indianapolis in America.Indianapolis is also John Greens(The Author) hometown so quite a few things that are in this book relate to John Greens life and weirdly all his main characters in his books are female and represent him which is pretty cool because its like reimagining yourself.
Some of the book is held at the Pickett mansion where they have a huge theatre and treats of your choice. The Pickett children act like their money is nothing when everyone they know just wants to be like them. But what they don't realise is money isn't everything and it sure doesn't make people happy it just makes them feel alone and like nothing really matters anymore. This also relates to the power and wealth theme which is also focused on the Pickett Family
White River is the towns main attraction which is just a large river that runs through the town.
"It's the only thing that brings people to this town these days"-Davis
Quotes
"We're such language-based creatures that to some extent we cannot know what we cannot name.So we assume it isn't real." -Aza
These are some quotes from the book that relate to it and explain it especially about the never ending spirals that both John Green and Aza have
"His bacteria would be in me forever, eighty million of them, breeding and growing and joining my bacteria and producing God knows what." -Aza
"I realised something Davis must have already known: Spirals grow infinitely small the farther you follow them inward, but they also grow infinitely large the farther you follow them out." -Aza
"It seemed like forever ago, like we've had this brief but still infinite forever. Some infinities are bigger than other infinities." -John Green
"When you're on a Ferris wheel all anyone ever talks about is being on the Ferris wheel and the view from the Ferris wheel and whether the Ferris wheel is scary and how many more times it will go around. Dating is like that. Nobody who's doing it ever talks about anything else."-Davis Pickett Jr
