According to Weber, Capitalism needed:

So motivations provided by Calvinism matched that needed by capitalism and was a crucial ingredient in its development. So Weber challenged Marx's claim that religion reflects economic base. Instead, can change economic base.
-
Criticisms:
It may not be true that Protestantism pre-dated to development of capitalism- early forms of capitalism seems to have occurred in pre-protestant Europe.
Was it not the case that new developing Capitalist Classes used Protestantism as a vehicle to challenge feudal order in other words, using religion as a justification of their demands, not as a cause of capitalism.
Calvinism doesn't necessarily lead to capitalism - why should people work hard collecting wealth and not spend it if fate is pre-destined by God?
May not have been religious content of Calvinism led to Protestant involvement in business but because they're excluded from many occupations because of their religion, so turned to business.
Weber
Examined reasons for development of capitalism in Western Europe from the 16th Century. Every other society had the ingredients for capitalism.
One element missing from Western Europe was a set of ideas that fit ideas of capitalism. (Rationality, profit, free workforce).
Set of ideas provided on Western Europe by rise of alternative form of Christianity, known as Calvinism.
Weber is a functionalist/Marxist, however much of his work supports Marx but doesn't just look at role of capitalism when looking at society class in society. (Interactionist/Interpretivist)
