Antilipemic Drugs
Mechanism Of Action
It acts to lower elevated serum lipids by reducing the very low density lipoprotein fraction rich in triglycerides.
Serum cholesterol may be decreased in those in those patients whose cholesterol is elevation is due to the presence of IDL as a result of Type III hyperlipoproteinemia
Clofibrate may inhibit the hepatic release of lipoproteins,potentiate the action of lipoprotein lipase and increase fecal excretion of neutral sterols

ContraIndication
Clofiberate is contraindicated in pregnant women.
It is contraindicated in patients with hepatic or renal dysfunction
Rhabdomyolysis and severe hyperkalemia have been reported in association with pre-existing renal insufficiencyIt is contraindicated in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis, since it may raise the already elevated cholesterol.
Side Effects
Gastrointestinal reactions are vomiting, loose stools, dyspepsia, vomiting, flatulence and abdominal distress.
Other side effects are Headache, dizziness and fatigue, skin rash , urticaria and pruritus
