Henry deserted Cromwell not because he was working in contrary to the King's desires, but because supporting him would mean risking the support from the new aristocracy, gentry and the middle classes (Cromwell would've been considered a heretic)
Rapid growing resentment against the new regime of religion broke out amongst his subjects. This broke out to open rebellions (Pilgrimage of Grace), which greatly threatened Henry's authority. The rebels blamed Cromwell for the new regime

Declared Henry's children more important than vicegerent. Also reasserted power of Cromwell's opponents (gave them precedence in Privy Council)
Cromwell packed the Privy Council with yes-Sayers and got Henry to give him the title of Lord Great Chamberlain (highest position)
