Pluralism and Absenteeism
Owning more than 1 diocese, meaning they would be away from their other parishes.
Men only joined the clergy for money. They were often poorly trained and they ignored the rules of celibacy.

Frederick, Elector of Saxony hid Luther at his castle at Wartburg. After a year, Luther left. Germany became divided between Protestant and Catholics. 1545; War of Religion. Ended in 1555; Treaty of Augsburg. Each prince would choose the religion of their people.
Luther's Beliefs
-Justification by Faith Alone.
-Priests should be allowed to marry.
-bible and mass should be in the vernacular language.
-Baptism and communion were the only real sacraments.
-Transubstantiation not consubstantiation.
Charles V, Emperor of Germany called a Diet in a town called Worms. Told Luther to recant -> refused -> declared an outlaw by the Edict of Worms.
Luther instructed to recant but he refused.1519; debated with John Eck. 1520 Leo X sent a papal bull called Exurge Domini which Luther burnt.
He was then excommunicated.

Martin Luther
Born in 1483, Saxony. Studied the Bible to find a way to heaven = Justification by Faith Alone.
Pope was giving Archbishop of Mainz (Luther's archbishop) half the
money raised. Luther wrote a letter to the archbishop which was
ignored. So Luther nailed 95 Theses to the door of Wittenberg
Castle. These ideas spread quickly because of the printing press.
Beliefs
-Married clergy.
-Vernacular.
-Predestination; only the elect get into heaven.
-Baptism is the only sacrament.
-Churches should have little or known decoration.
The City of God
-Church attendance is compulsory.
-Swearing was a crime.
-Dress cod was strict and simple.
-Heretics were burned at the stake.
Jean Calvin
Born in France, 1509. Believed Luther had not gone far enough. Hugeunots (French protestants) were persecuted so he fled to Swiss city of Geneva. Set up Presbyterianism.

-Banned the corruptions
-Priests were trained in seminaries.

- Born in Wittenberg in 1510.
- Local pries is Martin Luther.
- He baptised me when i was a baby.
- MY parents supported him when he argued with Pope Leo X about indulgances.
- I admire Prince Frederick for protecting Luther after he was declared an outlaw by the Edict of Worms.
- I can now read the Bible in my own language instead of having my priest explain it to me.
- I am afraid that some people have gone to far like the presbyterians in Geneva.
- They believe in predestination which means only a few people will get into heaven.
- I like Luther's idea of justification by faith alone.
- This means ordinary people like me can still get into heaven.
