Secondary Activities as System
A factory works like a system with inputs, processes and outputs
The industry gathers together the raw materials and anything else it needs to make the manufactured product. These things are called the inputs of the system.
The system then processes (changes) some of the inputs into outputs
The outputs of a factory include manufactured products, by-products and any wastes that are produced by the manufacturing process
Case study: Inputs, Processes and Outputs in an Irish Computer Factory
The inputs
Factory building
employees
Imported compnents
A case that surrounds the computer
A motherboard, which is the base on which some of the computer's parts are fitted
A central processing unit that performs all the computer's calculations. This the brain of the computer
A hard disk that stores information in the computer
A video card that converts information from electronic to visual form
A monitor that shows visual information on its screen
A keyboard
A mouse
The processes
1.When components arrive at the factory, they are tagged and shelved in the factory warehouse. 2.When a customer orders a computer, specific components are selected and brought to the production area. 3.The computer is assembled (put together) in the production area. 4.Quality control workers then ensure that the computer has been assembled properly. 5.The computer undergoes burn-in. This means it is test-run for a period of 12 hours to ensure that it works properly. 6. The new computer is packaged and delivered to customers
The outputs
Assembled computers are the principal output, although PC Pro also sells software packages and individual computer parts
