What is a pharmacopoeia?
A compilation (book, CDs & websites) that is produced by a regulatory authority
Contains entries for off patent drug and pharmaceutical preparation available within that authority/country
Year or version stated?
A batch should not only state BP but it should also state the year also. e.g BP80 = British pharmacopeia 1980
-
If year not stated, assume most recent or current
Why is it important?
All pharmaceutical manufacturing companies must produce medicines that comply with the appropriate Pharmacopeia
Tightly regulated, accredited organisations only
A company in one country can produce medicines for use in another country, but must pass the relevant monographs.
