Physical changes
Cardiovascular disease:disease of the heart and blood vessels,Narrowing of the arteries due to fat in the blood stream. Results in blood pressure. Fat can also block arteries Blood vessels lose elasticity which causes the heart to work harder. 160,000 deaths in uk 2011
Poor life choices such as gaining weight, smoking or drinking alcohol increase the risk. As well as lack of exercise
Degeneration of the nervous tissue: Senses depend on nervous system- to have good and bad sensory experiences. Ability to remember works declines due to short term memory. Reaction time decreases---leads to depression. Alzheimer's causes these affects
Blood flow decreases increasing risk of dementia and impairing mental functions--- exercise decreases high blood pressure.

Osteoarthritis:Wear and Tear of joints (becoming painful and stiff) . Type of Arthritis. Symptoms are different between individuals- overweight or family history increases chances.

Degeneration of the sense of organs: Hearing and vision may deteriorate as well as sense of balance as well as ability to taste
After 45 eyes ability to focus weakens and by 65 there is not much focusing power left e.g small prints are difficult to read

Reduced nutrients are absorbed: Energy requirements decrease. They need more protein rich foods for energy. Must have diet of vitamins and minerals
Certain foods become less efficient in older people as they can suffer from malnutrition even though they might have same diet as earlier adulthood.
Vitamin D is important for absorbing calcium. Those who are housebound may suffer due to lack of sunlight causing disorders such as OSTEOPOROSIS

Social effects of ageing
Healthcare: Different services; Primary care services- GP, Pharmacy, Dentist. However some people can be referred to specialists e.g. mental health problems. Acute care (specialists such as cancer treatment. Short-term)
Social care: Support people of practical or personal care e.g illness or disability. Care or Support worker (domiciliary care). There has to be an assessment before support is provided. Local authorities will then decided after an assessment. EXAMPLES include day centres, respite or residential care, charities and private organisations.
Financial support- struggle to cope. Occupational pension as well as state pension. Other financial benefits include NHS prescriptions- eye care, travel funds, free television licence and other discounts. Many rely on health care and support. Many choose to live at home however have support by friends and family. Others choose sheltered housing so they can call for assistance. Day care centres and Residential homes.
Respect is key. People shouldn't be forced to engage with individuals however opportunities should be provided.
