The River Tees
-
-
Source
Cross Fell, Pennines (893m)
-
Shallow river channel, low discharge, low velocity, large angular bedload, vertical erosion and V-shaped valleys
-
Interlocking spurs, waterfalls/gorges, rapids and potholes
-
Meanders
-
Middle-lower course, and eventually form oxbow lakes
-
-
-
High Force, Teesdale, Durham
River Tees flows over 2 different layers of rock - top rock is whinstone - very hard, and below is softer rock eg. shale
The limestone (softer rock) is eroded very rapidly, undercutting the whihsill, creating an overhand which eventually collapses
This process repeats and High Force retreats upstream, leaving a gorge with steep - almost vertical sides
