Gender (Overall academic achievement (WHY? (The female verbal advantage,…
Gender
-
Causes/ risk factors?
-
Women are under-represented in STEM due to the effects of stereotypes - both on the side of recruiters, teachers etc and via internalisation of these stereotypes and the impact that has on academic outcomes
-
Preferences: evidence
-
-
? Suggestion of choice - since women have better verbal skills and abilities in other subjects (English etc), perhaps men outperform in STEM because they don't have the luxury of choice?
-
-
Math
Girls fall behind?
-
-
Glass ceiling? Largest gap is at the top end of the spectrum i.e. highest performers most affected by gender differences than lowest achievers - bias is inconsistent and not a simple linear relationship
Hyde questions whether a gender difference truly exists? - looking @ effect sizes, there is a significant amount of overlap between the sexes... perhaps the gap is trivial?
Caveats
Testing method
Looking at A* to C results in GCSE - no difference, whereas PISA found difference in their unique test which was more applied quesitons
Culture
some countries have no gender differences in maths e.g. Russia, China... some have an inverse relationship than the UK - with girls outperforming boys e.g. Thailand/ Myanmar area
-
If environmental factors cause variation, then we can change and manipulate the environment in order to eliminate gender differences - not an innate issue
Differential treatment

-
Approach to work
girls more self-discipline, more mastery goals
Boys more disruptive, less likely to do homework, less likely to read for enjoyment - link to verbal/ language skills
