Water insecurity
Disease and Pollution
Contaminated drinking water in poor countries can lead to deadly diseases, as most people in LICs rely on rivers and lakes for water.
Food production
Lack of water has serious affects on agriculture as droughts damage the yield of the crops which can lead to food shortages.
Increasing amounts of industry in mostly NEEs uses lots of water, increasing water insecurity
Increasing water supply
Water supply can be increased by pumping water back into permeable rocks (aquifers) during when rainfall is high. This is useful in hot countries where surface water evaporates easily
Dams and reservoirs
Dams block up rivers causing a reservoir behind it. The amount of water let through the dam can be controlled so rainwater can be stored. Also they generate lots of electricity
However they are very expensive, take time to build and fill up and have a big affect on the people and wildlife around it.
