Developing Drugs
The 6 phases
4) Clinical trials 2
Human trials. Tests done on healthy individuals with very low doses being given to begin with. Left with 2-5 compounds
3) Clinical trials 1
Animal tests. Animals are given a known amount of the substance and are then carefully monitored for side effects. Left with 5-10 compounds
5) Clinical trials 3
Further human trials. Further tests are done to find the optimal dosage of the drug. Left with 1-2 compounds
2) Preclinical trials
Drugs are tested in a laboratory using computer models and human grown cells. Left with 10-20 compounds
-
1) Drug discovery
Scientists identify target molecules for a disease. Left with 5000-10,000 compounds
Double blind trials
-
-
-
-
Often, the placebo being given is A DIFFERENT DRUG that is already used for treating the target disease. This means that NO PATIENTS ARE DEPRIVED OF TREATMENT
Key points
