Feminism & Religion
Feminists views
-
Patriarchy- dominated by males. God is known as a man, Bible written by men for men.
- Men form leadership elite in religion. (men are in charge).
- Religious ritual excludes women and relegates them to a minor role.
- Religion places women in subordinate roles (mothers, family life).
- Religion justifies patriarchal oppression.
Witchcraft persecution
-
'Witches' were burnt for their ability to heal others- feminists argued that the power the women were demonstrating a threat to science emerging at the time- dominated by men.
Cathlocism restricts abortion/contraception, etc. Channeling women into family and mother-hood roles.
Marxist Feminists
Argued religion is an ideology working on behalf of capitalist class, legimating the idea that a women's primary function is to be a mother and take control of religious socialisation in the home.
This benefits capitalism as capitlism profits from women's low paid, part time work which helps them to raise a future of workers who can contribute to capitalism.
Radical Feminists
Everything in society works in the interests of men and their ability to oppress women. So religion oppresses women because it's constructed by men and men are able to dominate how religions are presented.
Simone de Beauvior, wrote a feminist book called 'The Second Sex' arguing men use religion to control women. Religion's a way of compensating women for their second-class status- religion tricks women into believing they're equal when they're 'the second sex'.
Christian Feminists
-
Daly- christianity is set of patriarchal myths, the catholic church eliminated religions with female Gods.
Muslim Feminists
Saadawi
Religions themselves aren't patriarchal, society is where norms and values are learnt. These norms and values have been created in the interests of men, which have been interpreted in a specific way in religion.
The Qur'an states both men and women can be stoned for committing adultery but because their culture allows men to have several wives and to be divorced, lot less likely for a men to be stoned.
Kurtz
In some Islamic societies, women have 'separate but equal' status. Women have power and gain respect from men in their role as mothers and housemakers but are excluded from power in public, e.g. at work.
Islam & Women: In public some Muslim women wear Hijab, Niqab or Burqa, in some Islamic societies, these are compulsory.

Evaluation
-
Man religions are gender blind, meaning men and women are treated equally.
Some religions have changed their stance and become more liberal - CofE appointed UK female bishop in 2015.
Although religion may be patriarchal, doesn't mean that they oppress women (Aldridge).
