Probability Sampling
SIMPLE RANDOM Most basic of sampling methods. Every unit has more or less equal chance of being selected
SYSTEMATIC Obtain a list of population, determine sampling interval (k), begin with random start between a range and select every Kth unit after
STRATIFIED Divide population into strata, select random sample from each subset, add sub-samples together to produce total sample
MULTI-STAGE CLUSTER Clusters are sampled from pop. Use above methods to find sample. (+) Good when no listing (-) Prone to high sampling errors which are compounded at each stage
Limitations of Survey
-
-
-
Self-reporting, rather than actual observation (I have to trust that respondent is speaking the truth, can't observe him)
Sampling Error
-
-
CONFIDENCE LEVEL: The higher the confidence level, the broader the area covered by normal curve. CONFIDENCE INTERVAL: Plus or minus XX%
What is Sampling?
-
Using sample statistics to estimate population parameters (Since it may be hard to get census from population)
SURVEY RESEARCH
:pen:Types of Survey
Self-administered
-
-
-
(+) Cheap, convenient, good for controversial behaviours (-) Low response rates
Interview Survey
-
-
(+) High response rate, good for complicated questions (-) Validity/ Reliability, involves interviewers which is costly
