The Life and Poetry of Sappho
Who was Sappho
Sappho was born between the Seventh and Eighth Century BC in Lesbos Greece
Common Misconception: Sappho is a lesbian
Sappho was in fact bisexual but is mistaken for Lesbian because of her sensual poems featuring women
I guess historians can't handle the concept of fucking multiple things unless it's other cultures
Lesbos would later become Lesbios in Latin and then Lesbian in English, due to the islands affiliation with Sappho
Historians are unclear on how to write her name, it has been written: Saffo, Psapfo, and the modern Sappho
Sappho is believed to have 2 brothers, at one point been married and had a child, and lived well into middle age
Her Poetry and Career
She was consider to be an equal to the famed poet Homer for her themes of love and sensuality
Plato ( a rumored gay philosopher ) affectionately referred to Sappho as the 10th muse
Based out of the capital of Lesbos, Mytilene, Sappho was one of the most lauded poets of her time
Sappho produced nine volumes of work recorded on papyrus scrolls and stored in the Library of Alexandria hundreds of years after her death
She is credited with coining the Sapphic stanza style which consists of 3 lengthy lines followed by a short 4th
There's debate on how Sappho's poems were to be preformed
Historians know they were preformed only for groups of young women known as Thiasos (THOY O SOS)
The goal of these groups was to educate and empower young women. Aphrodite was the patron of this group.
But it is debated whether Sappho's poetry was preformed to music from a lyre or as spoken word
Tragedy
Much of Sappho's work was destroyed by environmental conditions or censorship in the middle ages for its depiction of same sex relationships
Sappho leaped from the Leucadian rock to certain death in the sea because of her unrequited love of Phaon, a younger man and a sailor
History tried to erase her nevertheless, she persisted.
The Poetry
frequently describe images of nature, garlands, flowers, smoking altars, perfumed and bathed bodies and hair, and Aphrodite's rituals
