Assisting a Struggling Student students-who-dont-seem-to-care
Student is not completing classwork.
This may look like the following...
My first approach is identifying why the student is distracted. What is the skill that is being lost.
Introduce modalities for the struggling student. Not being able to formulate thoughts into words on paper, specifically.
After assignment has been modified, assess what that student has learned. Do they understand what was expected from them? Is the objective reached?
Be prepared to know what modalities to use for future tasks/assignments.
Work with the parent/guardian to communicate about struggles that are present in the classroom.
Suggest different ways for parents/guardians to assist their child. Provide examples. Provide samples of their child's completed/not completed work.
Talk with the student after assignment is complete, see if the modalities aided their learning.
Have the student express to you what their understanding is of the assignment and what they have responded with.
If writing is the issue, the student cannot formulate thoughts into words on paper, I would then modify by having them draw the assignment.
Providing ABC chart on the desk to be able to formulate words.
Allow more time on the assignment, as well as perhaps editing it to shorten the assignment for the struggling student.
One on one approach is helpful to directly connect.
Examine the entire class to see if anyone else is unclear of the assignment.
If they attempt at the task at hand, it is not correct and they are showing a lack of understanding of the task.
Child has their head down.
Child may become zoned out, totally unfocused and unaware of what is going on in the classroom.
A student usually shows a disconnection from the majority of the class.
