CHEMISTRY - UNIT 11 - LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT & RECYCLING
Basic Principles re Material or Product
3) Using the Product
Using product can damage environment e.g.. burning fuels releases greenhouse gases. Fertilisers can leach into streams & rivers damaging ecosystem.
How long product is used for is a factor - products that need lots of energy to produce but used for ages means less waste in long run
4) Product Disposal
-
-
Landfill sites take up space & pollute land & water eg. paint may wash off product in landfill & pollute river
-
-
Interpreting Data
Can compare LCAs for plastic & paper bags - show that even though plastic bags not biodegradable, take less energy to make & longer lifespan than paper bags so may be less harmful to environment
Problems with LCAs
-
Selective LCAs showing only some of impacts of product can be biased as can be written to support claims of a company to give +ve advertising
Use of energy, some natural resources & amount of certain types of waste can be quantified but effect of some pollutants harder to give numerical value to e.g. negative visual effect of plastic bags in environment compared to paper ones

LCA
-
Looks at every stage of product's life to assess the impact it would have on environment - 4 stages see above
